Aerospace Engineer: The career of the future

If you wish to be a child of the future, aerospace engineering is the career path for you. Whether you relish technical challenges or love being innovative, aerospace engineering has number of roles in a range of industries. Here is a perusal of this challenging career path.
The scientific world was recently celebrating the successful launch of India’s first Mars mission, the Managalyaan. The Mars Orbiter is India’s first interplanetary mission and if goes well, reached the Red Planet in September 2014. The success of this mission has proved yet again the 21st century will be a time of space stations, and robotic probes. It is a very exciting age that we are living in right now and the future has even more better opportunities, but only for those who deserve them. The world needs engineers, scientists, technologists and technicians who can take up the challenges and provide solutions to move ahead.
Man has always been fascinated what has been kept out of his reach, by design. Whether it is the deep recesses of the ocean or the vacuum of the space, the mankind’s fascination could not keep him away too long from the boundaries, of what was perceived out of bounds.  While ocean and sea exploration wasn’t that big a conquest, the real stride in future was when the scientists of USSR accomplished the first successful orbital launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957. Since then, countless missions have made it to as far as Pluto, the last planet in the solar system. The success of these missions was and remains highly dependent on our understanding of the concepts of space, physics and what is now called as aerospace engineering. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that had it not been for the talented aerospace engineers, most of these missions would not have been possible.
The future belongs to even more courageous and exciting space conquests which again require the service of genius, hardworking and able engineers and scientists. If you want to be a part of the history in the future, becoming an aerospace engineer would be a smart way of doing that.

What is aerospace engineering?

This branch of engineering deals with design, development and testing of various tools and technologies involved in aircraft and spaceships. The craft was originally known as aeronautical engineering, although that was the time when space didn’t figured that prominently in the scheme of things. As flight technology advanced to include crafts that operated in outer space, aerospace engineering replaced the nomenclature and gained acceptance amongst the academic and scientific fraternity. The branch is also known as rocket science in popular culture, because that is what literally you will be studying about.

What will you do as an aerospace engineer?

Depends. There are so many job options and varied roles to fill in this industry, it would be wrong to limit the work area of an aerospace engineer just to aircrafts or spacecrafts. There are several departments and as a fresh graduate just out of the university, it will take some time before you find the specialization best suited for you. The different specialist areas include flight simulation, aerodynamics, stress engineering, sustainable aircraft design avionics, fuel systems, satellite design, missiles, helicopters, and the list doesn’t ends here. Just like the diverse specializations, the work itself is quite diverse.
Before you embark on this career path, it is essential to have your expectations in check, because the reality is often different from the common perception. As an individual you wouldn’t be assembling rockets or spacecraft’s; that’s what teams are for. However, you indeed will be playing an important part of team, working in a lab on model, at a computer, preparing reports and studying charts. Sometimes, you could be pulled from one project and placed in an entirely different project.
Aerospace engineers are typically employed with the aerospace industry, but their wide knowledge spectrum and highly demanded skills make them fit for various roles in other industries as well. Automotive, Control and instrumentation, architectural engineering and related services, communication and equipment manufacturing are some of the industries that place high value on skills of an aerospace engineer.

How to become one?

The road to become an aerospace engineer is certainly not the easiest. However those who manage to survive the rigorous training and remain focused are the ones who enjoy an above-average career satisfaction.  You should have a strong grasp of concepts of physics, chemistry, mathematics, material science and statistics among other subjects.
Pursuing a four year engineering degree is the simplest and also quickest way to set the stage for a long and fulfilling career. The engineering degree can be preferably followed by a postgraduate qualification. However a degree is only as good as the college or university from which it is pursued. There are many top institutions such as California Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Imperial College London and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore that have achieved inimitable reputation owing to their exceptional academic credentials.
Some major companies involved in the industry also run graduate schemes. As a part of the graduate program, the trainees are made to work in different departments, getting a feel of how the companies operate before moving into a specialist role. In fact, owing to being the home to the best aeronautical companies like HAL, amongst others, aerospace engineering is one of the top choice of people looking for a good career in Bangalore.

What you stand to gain?

Apart from the immense job satisfaction and an actual chance to become a celebrated part of the history through your creations, a career as aerospace engineer will earn you a handsome paycheck every month. In fact, aerospace engineers earn one of the best average starting salaries among those holding bachelor’s degree. As per the Bureau of Labor Statistics 2017 data, an aerospace engineer earned $100, 000 median salary annually. The best paid got an annual salary of $ 147,810.  As you will gain experience your importance will increase in direct proportions, handling projects and teams.
